In New York City, the Department of Parks & Recreation with support from the City and State of New York, as well as the federal government have undertaken a multi-million dollar renovation of the historic Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island.

Closed in 2001 shortly after the September 11th attacks, Fresh Kills has undergone almost a decade of cleanup and planning.

Construction on the park is now breaking ground, and will result in a park three times the size of Central Park with space for sports, wildlife, and play.
